Rasha Kahil & Liane Lang
Both Rasha Kahil and Liane Lang’s artistic practices deal with the human body as form that is alien in its contextual landscape – their work is sometimes confrontational or unsettling, often beautiful and always compelling.
Each of their works shown in this exhibition is irreverent in its own way – in Kahil’s body of work “In Your Home: 2008-2011″ she subverts the domestic sanctity of other peoples living spaces as she covertly disrobes and documents her fleeting nudity in a series of unlikely looking living rooms, kitchens and bedrooms.
Liane Lang’s series “Spectres” utilizes a more reverential environment – the classical cast museum at Heidelberg, Germany – in which to interject. In and around the pure-white casts of Herculean & mythic figures she places finely crafted mannequins, creating intimate and subversive relationships.

John Baldessari – Pure Beauty
John Baldessari: Pure Beauty (on its last leg following stints at the Tate Modern, Museu d’ Contemporani de Barcelona and LACMA) opened at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. It’s the first major U.S. retrospective of his work in nearly 20 years. Considered one of the most influential conceptual artists to come out of the 20th century, Baldessari was bucking the system long before it was cool, and then mundane to do so.

Maison Martin Margiela ‘20′
Recently opened at Somerset House is Maison Martin Margiela ‘20′, an extensive showcase that celebrates 20 years of the brand’s conceptual approach to fashion. On display are installations, photography, video and film that elaborate on designer Martin Margiela’s philosophy, from its deconstructivist design aesthetics to avant-garde couture and understated branding to store interiors and love for Trompe-l’œil. The show was previously staged at Modemuseum in antwerp and Munich’s Haus Der Kunst.

Hixsept – Drift

With backgrounds as graffiti artists, founders and designers Hëx and Hept meld grafic design, art and clothing in their Hixsept collections. Their newest collection entitled ‘Drift’ gets our top marks for its parkas, chinos and button downs in muted tones, as well as the photography by New York based photographer Jeremy Liebman.
Erwin Olaf

The Dutch photographer Erwin Olaf’s latest photo and video series, “Hotel” and “Dawn & Dusk,” opened last week at New York’s Hasted Hunt Kraeutler. ‘Dawn & Dusk’ mixes colour and black-and-white photography (a departure for Olaf); while ‘Hotel’ sees melancholic images of doll-like nude women in noirish hotel rooms.

HYPER – Denis Darzacq

HYPER has opened at The Laurence Miller Gallery in New York - an exhibition of 15 photographs by the French photographer Denis Darzacq. Darzacq brings street dancers to the shopping aisles of garish supermarkets in Paris and Rouen and asks them to perform leaps and jumps - capturing them mid flight. Denis Darzacq has exhibited extensively in Europe and Australia over the past ten years. He has worked on music videos and feature films since 1985, collaborated with Agnes B on fashion catalogs, and has three monographs published.

apartamento 4

Taking a completely new approach in the interior design magazine market, apartamento features real people in real environments, with interiors we can all aspire to rather than over-styled, over-glossy, catalogue-like spreads. The 4th issue is now available in all good magazine stores, and in our opinion is definitely worth picking up.
31 Rue Cambon

We’re excited to learn of the first issue of the new Chanel magazine art directed and designed by Purple’s Olivier Zahm. Named 31 Rue Cambon after the first ever Chanel boutique, it will be distributed worldwide in all of their stores soon.
Elad Lassry

We’re big fans of the work of Elad Lassry. Born in Tel Aviv, but residing in Los Angeles, he works primarily in film and photography. He applies his high-conceptualism-meets-stock photography technique to everything from wolves, flamingos, and falcons to pickles, flowers, and friends, mostly shot in his east Hollywood studio, and shows his knack for upending expected takes on still-life and portraiture. At first his clean, direct shots look like generic commercial photography from the ’70s and ’80s, but the artist’s use of blurs, double exposure and harsh colors make them appear new and riveting. With recent solo exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art and David Kordansky Gallery, and participation in the group show Younger Than Jesus at the New Museum, he clearly is one to watch.
